Daniel Lee ends London's catwalk schedule with 61 looks made alongside Celia Birtwell

Burberry's Summer 2027 show at Chelsea College of Arts on Monday evening was the last catwalk listed on the British Fashion Council schedule, and it lands in the year the company returned to profit and to comparable sales growth.

Burberry showed its Summer 2027 collection at Chelsea College of Arts, UAL, in London at 19:00 on Monday 21 September 2026. The British Fashion Council's own London Fashion Week schedule lists the show as a catwalk, invite only, under the schedule's combined menswear and womenswear initiative. It was the last catwalk on the official schedule for the season: the only entries the council lists later that day are seven evening events, all of them carrying an identical 22:00 placeholder start.

The collection runs to 61 looks, numbered 01 to 61 in the house's own gallery, and was made with the British textile artist Celia Birtwell. Daniel Lee, Burberry's Chief Creative Officer, is credited by that title beneath his statement on the company's Summer 2027 show page, where he says of the collection: "Summer 2027 is a return to the basis of things. To something instinctive. To something felt. Something true."

The house describes the work in the same place as "Reinterpreting Burberry's iconic codes and signatures through the joyful lens of British textile artist Celia Birtwell, the collection is a celebration of the exchange of ideas and collaboration – brought to life through craft, skill and technique."

The room, and the week around it

Burberry set out what it wanted the space to do in its own show notes. "Presented at Chelsea College of Arts, UAL, where wooden seating brings warmth into the white space," the page reads. "Against this minimalist backdrop, the collection reads as human rather than perfect – soulful and tactile." The house does not use the spring or summer split; it calls this one Summer 2027 throughout.

There is a long institutional memory behind the name. The council's own designer profile for the label records that Burberry was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, who, in the profile's words, "revolutionised rainwear with his invention of gabardine". The house emblem is the Equestrian Knight Design, its banner reading Prorsum, Latin for forward, and the company is registered at Horseferry House on Horseferry Road in London.

The council's September schedule carries 178 listed entries across 16 to 21 September 2026, with 22 of them falling on the closing Monday. By type, 43 are catwalks, 58 are evening events, 19 are presentations and 18 are appointments, with smaller counts of showcases, pop ups, panels and screenings, and four listings each for the NEWGEN catwalk and presentation spaces. The council's public page gives the season as Thursday 17 to Monday 21 September 2026, though its feed also carries one evening event on the Wednesday before.

That 178 is a count of the council's own schedule entries taken from its live feed on 23 September 2026. The council does not publish the figure as an official total, and a schedule can be amended after the fact.

The numbers the show arrives on top of

The year around this collection has been the strongest Burberry has reported in some time. In its preliminary results for the 52 weeks to 28 March 2026, filed as a regulatory announcement on 14 May 2026, the company reported adjusted operating profit of £160m against £26m the year before, with the adjusted operating margin at 6.6% against 1.0%. Revenue was £2,420m against £2,461m, down 2% as reported and flat at constant exchange rates. Comparable store sales rose 2% after a 12% decline the year before. Free cash flow was £141m and net debt fell to £852m from £1,111m. The directors elected not to declare a dividend.

The first quarter update, filed on 17 July 2026, kept the direction. Retail revenue for the 13 weeks to 27 June 2026 was £455m against £433m, with comparable retail sales up 5% against a 1% decline in the same quarter a year earlier. By region, comparable sales were up 12% in the Americas, 9% in Greater China and 3% in Asia Pacific, and down 3% in the region covering Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa. The company counted 413 directly operated stores at the end of the quarter, plus 27 franchise stores.

In that announcement, Chief Executive Joshua Schulman said: "For the first time in three years, we saw growth across our Womenswear, Menswear, Accessories and Childrenswear divisions, anchored by the outperformance of Outerwear. Our strategy is working."

What the documents do not say

No company statement connects the Summer 2027 collection to any of those figures. The link between a show and a set of results is context a reader can hold, not a claim Burberry has made, and it is not put in the company's mouth here.

Several other things are simply not on the record. No on-sale date for the collection appears on the house's page, which offers only a sign-up for notice when it arrives. No commercial terms for the Celia Birtwell collaboration are disclosed in any primary document, and no primary document carries a statement from Birtwell herself. Burberry's corporate newsroom could not be read at all, every path on it returning an automated challenge, so the corporate release for the show, which would carry the full collection notes and credits, was not obtained. Everything attributed to the company above comes either from its own consumer site or from the announcements filed with the exchange.

One piece of housekeeping sits just past the show. The chair, Gerry Murphy, retires from the date of the interim results, which the company has said are due on Thursday 12 November 2026. William Jackson, who joined the board on 1 July 2026 and stood for election at the annual meeting a fortnight later, succeeds him.
