Armani gives Emporio to an outsider, six days before Milan opens
The Armani Group has named Dario Vitale creative director of Emporio Armani and Giorgio Armani Accessories, describing him in its own announcement of 16 September 2026 as the first to hold the role outside the Armani family.
On 16 September 2026 the Armani Group published an announcement on its own website, datelined Milan, under the headline "DARIO VITALE APPOINTED CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF EMPORIO ARMANI AND GIORGIO ARMANI ACCESSORIES". The job covers two things at once: Emporio Armani, the whole line, and Giorgio Armani Accessories. The release states that Vitale is "the first to hold this role outside the Armani family", and it ends on a single line — "Dario Vitale will join the Armani Group with immediate effect."
He arrives six days before the city opens. The official calendar of the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana has Milano Fashion Week Women's Collection Spring/Summer 2027 running from 22 to 28 September 2026, with an Emporio Armani presentation at 20:00 on 24 September and a Giorgio Armani show at 11:00 on 27 September. Both are listed at Via Bergognone 59. That address is the Armani/Teatro, and it is the one the group itself gave in September 2025 for the founder's funeral chamber.
The appointment was published on the same page of armani.com that had carried, since 4 September 2025, the group's notice of Giorgio Armani's death, which opened: "With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani." That notice was still on the page in an archived capture taken on 10 May 2026. By 23 September 2026 the page held the Vitale announcement instead.
What the house said
The release carries three sets of speakers. Vitale is quoted first.
"I am honored to take on this dual role across Emporio Armani and Giorgio Armani, and deeply grateful to Silvana and Leo for welcoming me into their world. Armani has a powerful legacy and unmistakable design language; a heritage that has spanned decades and shaped the history of fashion. I approach all of this with a deep sense of responsibility and excitement as we build upon that rich foundation, defining a new era together."
Silvana Armani, Head of Womenswear Design, and Leo Dell'Orco, Head of Menswear Design of the Armani Group, speak jointly in the same announcement: "Emporio Armani is much more than a line for us: it is a reality to which we are deeply connected, having followed and shared its journey since the very beginning. Emporio was born as a space of freedom, experimentation and energy, and we are convinced that Dario's arrival in our team, as a talent already established on the international stage, will interpret its spirit with respect and authenticity."
Giuseppe Marsocci, CEO and Managing Director of the Armani Group, is quoted last: "The appointment of Dario Vitale marks an important milestone for the Armani Group: a decision that strengthens our creative organization and confirms our commitment to looking ahead, consolidating the Group's path of evolution while remaining faithful to Giorgio Armani's values and vision. Emporio Armani is a brand of strategic relevance for us and our partners around the world. Giorgio Armani accessories represent a great opportunity. We look to this new phase with enormous confidence."
One sentence of curriculum vitae
The most striking thing in the announcement is what it leaves out. The whole of Vitale's working life, in the house's telling, is one sentence: "Throughout his career, Dario Vitale has gained significant experience in the fashion industry, working with leading companies and developing a keen sensitivity to product, quality, consistency and contemporaneity."
That sentence names no company. Not one. A house appointing its first creative director from outside the founding family introduced him without a single employer attached to his name, in a release that was otherwise precise about titles, and that took care to name the two designers he will work beside and the chief executive. The silence is the release's own, and it is worth reading as written rather than filled in.
What the filings say
The companies Vitale worked for most recently did put his name in documents, and those documents are specific. Capri Holdings Limited, in its Form 10-K for the year ended 29 March 2025, filed on 28 May 2025, states: "Effective April 1, 2025, Dario Vitale became Versace's Chief Creative Officer." The same filing records that Donatella Versace "had been the brand's Artistic Director for almost 30 years".
The appointment had been announced on 13 March 2025, in a Capri Holdings release datelined London, which moved Donatella Versace to Chief Brand Ambassador and said she would "dedicate herself to the support of Versace's philanthropic and charitable endeavours". That release also supplies the only previous employer any company document gives him: "Mr. Vitale joins Versace from Miu Miu where he was formerly the Design and Image Director."
Eight months into the job, the house was sold. Capri Holdings announced on 2 December 2025, in a Form 8-K exhibit datelined London, that it had completed the sale of Versace to Prada S.p.A. for $1.375 billion in cash, subject to certain adjustments. In that exhibit, chairman and chief executive John D. Idol thanks Vitale by name. On 5 February 2026 Prada Group announced Pieter Mulier as Versace's Chief Creative Officer, effective 1 July 2026, reporting to Versace Executive Chairman Lorenzo Bertelli. The release names Mulier and never mentions Vitale.
No company has published a statement explaining why Vitale left Versace, or on what terms. Neither Capri Holdings nor Prada Group issued one, and nothing in the Armani announcement refers to it.
What is still unsaid
The release gives no date for Vitale's first collection, and no season. The Emporio Armani presentation falls eight days after his appointment; nothing in any of these documents says whether he had a hand in it. It does not say who he reports to, or whether the remits of Silvana Armani and Leo Dell'Orco change. And the role as stated covers Emporio Armani and Giorgio Armani Accessories — the main Giorgio Armani ready-to-wear line, which shows on 27 September, is not mentioned.
The scale of the business he joins is harder to pin down than it should be. This desk found no results document published by the Armani Group itself, so there is no figure here to set against the Versace numbers that sit in Capri Holdings' filings.
