Skin Loses About One Per Cent of Its Elasticity a Year From the Age of 25
Barbara Sturm's new mask claims to restore 84 per cent of it in five applications, which is a specific enough promise to be worth examining.
Barbara Sturm did not start in skincare. She began in orthopaedics, then applied what she knew about anti-inflammatory science to the face, developed the blood facial that made her name, and launched her Molecular Cosmetics line in 2014.
The hyaluronic acid serum that established her reputation a decade ago is still the reference point. So the bar for anything joining her Super Anti-Aging collection is set by that, and this month two products have cleared it: a reformulated Super Anti-Aging Serum, and a new Super Anti-Aging Face Mask Rich.
Why elasticity is the hard one
The mask goes after elasticity, and the reason that is ambitious is structural.
Elasticity declines by roughly one per cent a year from the age of 25. Sturm describes it as a defining characteristic of youthful skin, and also one of the most difficult parameters to improve, because it is determined by the dermal network of collagen and elastin rather than by anything sitting near the surface.
Her claim is that the formula has cracked it. According to the brand's clinical studies, the mask restores skin elasticity by 84 per cent across five applications.
That is an unusually precise figure for this category, and it is the brand's own testing rather than independent work, which is worth holding in mind. But a specific claim from a named study is a more accountable thing to publish than the usual vocabulary of radiance and renewal.

What is in it
The mask is an intensive cream-to-oil treatment built on lipid-rich actives, antioxidants and multi-weight hydrators.
The base is Japanese camellia and passion fruit oils, both high in omega-9 fatty acids. A blend of hyaluronic acids, glycolipids and barley extract does the hydration and softens the look of fine lines. Antioxidants including cherimoya extract are there to calm visible stress, support the barrier and improve resilience.
The texture matters more than it sounds, because a mask that is unpleasant does not get used five times. This one is neither sticky nor heavy, and applies cool, which makes the ten minutes lying down feel like the point rather than the price.
It also comes with a stainless-steel gua sha, intended to help with application, encourage lymphatic drainage and work the facial contours. That is effectively one of Sturm's facials reduced to something you can do on a sofa.

The serum is still the centrepiece
The mask is new. The serum is an evolution of the original Super Anti-Aging Serum, which has anchored the Molecular Cosmetics collection since 2015.
The reformulation adds further bioactives and antioxidants, plus ingredients intended to support NAD+, a molecule involved in cellular energy production. NAD+ has become one of the more heavily discussed targets in longevity science over the past few years, and its arrival in topical skincare is a reasonable indicator of where the category is heading.
The serum is aimed at the full list of what changes with age: hydration, firmness, elasticity, plumpness and radiance, together with the visible effects of environmental and lifestyle stress, meaning fine lines, wrinkles, dullness and uneven texture.
What is actually being sold
It is worth being clear-eyed about the proposition. Gravity is not negotiable, and nothing in a jar reverses the passage of time.
What Sturm is offering is narrower and more credible than that: a science-led, inflammation-conscious approach, developed by someone who came to skin from medicine rather than from marketing, with numbers attached to the claims.
Whether an 84 per cent improvement in elasticity survives independent testing is a separate question, and one nobody outside the brand can currently answer. But publishing a figure at all invites the scrutiny, which is more than most of this category risks.
